These small baked bites are a simple occasional treat for dogs. They use familiar, dog-friendly ingredients and skip added sugar, salt, spices, and artificial sweeteners.
Ingredients
- 1 small apple, peeled, cored, and finely grated
- 1/2 cup finely grated carrot
- 1 cup plain rolled oats
- 1 large egg
- 2–4 tablespoons plain water, only as needed
Before You Start: Ingredient Safety
Remove the apple core, seeds, and stem completely before grating. Do not use applesauce with added sweeteners. Keep the recipe plain: avoid xylitol or birch sugar, chocolate, grapes or raisins, onions, garlic, nutmeg, salt, and other seasonings. If your dog has food sensitivities, is on a prescribed diet, or has a health condition, check with your veterinarian before offering a new homemade treat.
Directions
- Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- Mix the grated apple, carrot, oats, and egg in a bowl. Add water one tablespoon at a time only until the mixture holds together.
- Scoop small teaspoon-sized portions onto the sheet and gently flatten them.
- Bake for 15–18 minutes, until set and lightly firm around the edges.
- Let the treats cool completely before serving.
Serving & Storage
Offer one small bite first when introducing any new food, then watch how your dog does. Treats are not a replacement for a complete and balanced diet; keep portions modest and adjust regular food if needed. Store cooled treats in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, or freeze for longer storage. Discard any treats that smell off or show mold.
Tail Nutrition Safety Note
Every dog is different. Supervise treat time, choose a size appropriate for your dog, and provide fresh water. Contact your veterinarian if you have questions about your dog’s individual dietary needs.
